Once again - really well written, Clare. And please know that many in our local Korumburra community want to distance ourselves from the bizarre grandstanding of one of our local doctors, at a time when sentence is yet to be passed and an appeal is still a possibility.
I’m a doctor in Australia (working in emergency, no less) and was sooo disturbed by that doctor’s ?professional opinion? Bizarre grandstanding is a perfect way to describe it.
Thanks Claire. I’m barreling through the pod still so this was a great addition. I’d love to read more about what wasn’t told at the trial. I’ll get to it on the pod but I enjoy your updates more. As I read, I hear your voice…I’ve listened to MANY Cancelled eps. 😬
Listening to the AI voice read this out to me (while grocery shopping) and trying to mentally translate their overly earnest tone into yours… love your writing style, very much worth taking the time to sit down and actually read it!
Excellent Claire, I listened to Mushroom case daily too.... also went down the rabbit hole of devouring (excuse the pun) everything about this case. Why? I was just fascinated with this bizarre case and like most people, I do have questions of why??? Those families now have to try to get on with life (minus some very important loved people) so very tragic.
I listened each day to a similar podcast (Say Grace)and had my own murder board in my head (but mine was a whiteboard). I still can’t believe that a person would deliberately attempt to kill 4 family members with lunch. Such an intriguing case and so sad for the whole family. Love your writing and your take on the world.
The reason for the media obsession/saturation, minute by minute…I don’t think they expected it to run as long as it did. They, in housing terms, over capitalised on it - they were stuck & they had to find content, they couldn’t pull it or back it off or “we will get back to you shortly” because that’s not how the 24/7 news cycle works now.
If you go to your “favourite” blog & it hasn’t been updated for 15 minutes people simply go elsewhere & if the media outlet has invested so much time, effort, resources & staff in it they can’t afford for you to go elsewhere….its a beast that needs to be fed.
Thanks a lot, Claire, for the great write-up. You tackled some of the questions I had. Erin really was her own worst enemy. I heard that Simon wasn’t a great husband and didn’t treat her well, but is that enough of a reason? Also, I agree, the doctor totally crossed the line ethics-wise—what a creep. I really hope I never have to say that about any doctor again. Those poor kids — I hope they get the support they’re gonna need from now on.

Loved this recap of the mushy trial…I missed so many points throughout & this was a clever & witty overview. Love your writing Clare :)

The most interesting article I’ve read on the case - thanks Clare
So good 😀 loved reading this.
Love reading your work Clare!
The feeding the leftovers to the kids is what gets me. Could it be that this is just extreme carelessness?? It doesn’t seem possible.

Well, Detective, whaddya think her motive was? I’d be keen to hear your theory… Or will we have to wait til you write & produce the TV series? 😉
